Outages

September 1, 2005
Comcast makes little Jesus cry. IP issues have been sorted out... for now.

August 21, 2005
Comcast is being a little bitch. I was gone from Friday 8/19/05 until Sunday 8/21/05. My network and my machines got confused from the up/down of Comcast. Just reset them all. The Woods is back up and can be reached by connecting to thewoods.hopto.org:1339 again.

Secure Chat Room

I'm having the server The Woods hold open the chat room #thewoods all the time.

To enter it, go to the WASTE client window, and View > Create/join chat... Enter the name #thewoods and join.

There are not that many of us on at any one time, but I'll keep the standing group chat room open. I do check it from time to time, so feel free to leave a message that way as well as via mail. :)

Setting up on The Woods WASTE network

Overview
I've set up a waste network on one of my servers and my desktop. I've configured my
firewall to allow connection to both.

It's a very very secure network for encrypted file sharing and chat.

You can get to our Blog here:
http://thebroccoliwoods.blogspot.com/

The Software
You can get the software here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/waste/waste-setup-1.5-beta-3-full-eng.exe?download

Network Password
Set up to join a waste network named (File>Preferences>Network>Password):
broccoli

Server Public Key
Add the server public key to your list of public
keys(File>Preferences>Network>Public Keys):

WASTE_PUBLIC_KEY 20 2048 The Woods

Adding You to the Network

Send me your public key and I'll add it to the network. When you send it, put it in an email and send it to my gmail account WITH NO OTHER TEXT IN THE MESSAGE. These are PPKs and are sensitive to every character.

1. File>Preferences>Network>Private Key
2. Click on the button
3. Mail it to me

Connecting to the Network

Once I've done that I'll let you know and you can attach to the network:
1. Open the waste application
2. View>Network Status
3. Enter
thewoods.hopto.org:1338
4. Press the connect button (you should connect)

To connect to my desktop WASTE as well, enter:
thewoods.hopto.org:1339

If you are behing a NAT or Firewall
If you are behind a firewall/NAT, don't forget to open port 1337 to
the machine of yours running WASTE.

If you do not do this, other people in the network will not be able to connect to you unless you contact them first. This makes the network less robust by making linkages more fragile. For example, if my IP address changes and yours does not, I can still reconnect to you. At which time your client would get my new IP address automatically.

Other adjustments
Your shares:
File > Preferences > File Transfers > Sending

Add your share directories to "Directoreis to scan" and set "Rescan
directories ever " xx "minutes" to be on and every 60-120 minutes or
so.

I find setting the connections a bit higher makes things more robust:
View > Network Status
Set "Maintain " xx "connections" to something like 5 or 10.

How do I switch from TFMR waste to The Woods waste?

1. If you gave the same public key to both networks you would only
need to change the password in File > Preferences > Network >
Password. For The Woods it is broccoli. For TFMR it is TFMR.
Then connect to one of their servers.

2. If you want both nets running at once you need to set up a
different Profile. File > Preferences > Profiles. Check "Append
profile name to all window titles" and "Show profile manager on start
up". Then create a new profile. Each profile can have it's own keys,
networks, etc. You will be prompted which one to use when starting
waste. If you want both to run at once, just start WASTE twice and
choose each of the profiles in turn.

3. Don't forget that if you are allowing connections, each profile will need to have its own IP address. And each of these will need to be in the passthrough section of your Firewall or NAT.

The Woods WASTE net now has its own Domain Name

Ok, I've set up a free dynamic DNS account for the WASTE network

So when trying to make a connection to The Woods WASTE net, you will type in:
thewoods.hopto.org:1338

And to connect to my WASTE client
thewoods.hopto.org:1339
